ELMHURST, Ill. – In similar fashion to Saturday's twinbill split against Robert Morris, the Roosevelt baseball team rebounded from a tough one-run loss in Sunday's doubleheader opener with strong pitching and early offense to take the finale of the series at Plunkett Athletic Complex.
Roosevelt scored three times in the bottom of the first of the nightcap and saw seniors Ruben Lomeli and Sam Cook keep the Eagles' bats at bay in a 3-2 series-ending victory for the Lakers.
In Sunday's doubleheader opener, Roosevelt nearly rallied back from a six-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth with a five-run outburst, but the Lakers fell a run short with the tying tally in scoring position for a wild 11-10 loss.
The Lakers are now 3-7 overall and 1-2 in CCAC play, as the finale was a non-conference contest. The Eagles are 7-6 and 2-1 in the CCAC.
Danny Haze had an RBI single and Ismael De La Cruz issued the game-deciding damage with his two-out, two-run single to make it a 3-0 Laker lead early in the second affair.
RMU took advantage of a failed pickoff that put a runner at third to set up Andrew Sebastian's RBI single in the third, and the Eagles cut the Lakers' lead to one on a sac fly by Christian Kaplan a few batters later.
But Lomeli left the start having retired nine consecutive batters, and Cook made his first appearance of the year with two innings of scoreless one-hit ball for the save.
Sunday's lid-lifter was filled with offensive fireworks, especially late, and despite out-hitting the Eagles 15-9, the Lakers couldn't complete the comeback despite their best efforts in the final frame.
Trailing 11-5 with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Roosevelt sent nine batters to the plate and had five straight singles at one point to make it 11-8.
After a strikeout to give the Lakers one last out, Alvin Perez and Ismael De La Cruz hit RBI singles to make it a one-run game and put the tying run at second and the winning run on base at first. But Jon Knies hit a fly ball to right that was caught to end the game.
Charlie Zeschke went 4-for-5 with two RBI in the opener, while Alex Neufeld had three hits and Danny Haze drove in three runs, including two on his first homer of the year.

Senior Ismael De La Cruz delivered an early two-run single that proved to be the game-deciding hit in Sunday's finale.
