Big Fourth Inning In Twinbill Opener Highlights Baseball's Split Against Robert Morris

CAROL STREAM, Ill. - Byron Skinner drove in four runs during his 4-for-6 day at the dish, and the Roosevelt baseball team rallied back from a three-run deficit in its doubleheader opener against Robert Morris by scoring six times in the fourth for a game one win and eventual twinbill split at Lee Pfund Stadium on Sunday.

Roosevelt (4-10, 1-2 CCAC) won the first contest by a final of 7-3 before falling to Robert Morris (12-9, 2-3 CCAC) 14-4 in the second game.

Skinner went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in both contests, while Danny Grzywa homered in the second game and drove in three runs overall.

The Eagles took advantage of a misplayed popup near the leftfield line in the third inning of game one to score three times, but the Lakers responded in a big way in the inning that followed that error-aided spurt.

Danny Haze and Dylan Grabowski reached base to set up Skinner, who launched a double to left to drive in both runs and cut the disadvantage to a single run. After Jordan Gosztola singled to put runners at the corners, it was Mike Czarnik who sent a base hit to right center to tie the game.

Michael Lally's groundout put a pair in scoring position for Grzywa, who singled through the left side to bring in the go-ahead run.

Nathan Greene then sent a squeeze bunt down the first base line that elicited a throw home that was too late, allowing Czarnik to keep the inning going with another run on the board for the RU 9.

The sixth and final run of the huge inning came home by way of a wild pitch, as Grzywa came in on an errant offering out of the paw of reliever AJ Bernstein.

The Lakers tacked on one more in the fifth on Grzywa's bases-loaded walk.

Sam Cook was solid in six innings of work, recording seven strikeouts and allowing just two earned tallies during his quality start, and Jared Jayne came on with two on and no out in the seventh to shut down the Eagles' comeback attempt for the save.

Game two was not as pleasant for the Lakers, as Robert Morris scored right off the bat with three first-inning runs off of starter Marcus Radz. The Eagles tacked on three more in the third to eventually go up 6-0.

Roosevelt would scratch some runs over the course of the next four innings, with RBI from Skinner, Grzywa (via a home run to left) and Nate Bukowski, but a five-run fifth from Robert Morris' offense proved to be doom to the Green and White rally.

The Lakers' Opening Day at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood is slated for this Tuesday, April 1 at 1 p.m. against CCAC foe Trinity Christian.
