Crestwood, Ill. - The Roosevelt baseball team swept a doubleheader from rival Robert Morris to win the city-series from the Eagles on Saturday. The Lakers (4-17, 3-6) blanked Robert Morris 3-0 in game one behind a complete-game shutout from freshman pitcher
Chris Jennings and then held off a late Eagles (18-10, 7-6) rally for a 4-3 triumph in the nightcap.
Freshman
Steve Schwartz and senior
Ernesto Irizarry each had three hits in the two games for Roosevelt, as the Lakers have now won three of their last four outings.
In game one, Jennings tossed a three-hit shutout for his first career victory as the Lakers topped Robert Morris, 3-0.
Jennings got all the run support he needed in the bottom of the first inning as Roosevelt scored three runs on three hits. Sophomore
Dylan Grabowski drove in the first run with a single. Senior
Tony Valdes plated a run on a ground out and Irizarry capped the rally with a two-out RBI single.
Jennings pitched his way out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth and then found himself in trouble, once again, in the seventh as the Eagles loaded the bases with one out. Jennings navigated Roosevelt to victory and preserved the shutout, getting pinch hitter James Dawson to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Jennings is now 1-3 on the year with the win, striking out four in his seven innings of work. Al Galvan was the losing pitcher after surrendering three runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Game two started much like game one with Roosevelt taking an early 1-0 lead with an unearned tally in the first and then watching starter
T.J. Davis hold Robert Morris scoreless through the first four innings. The Eagles plated their first run of the day in the fifth, tying the game on a two-out single from Tim Meyer.
The Lakers answered right back, though, in the bottom of the inning with three runs to reclaim the lead, 4-1. Senior
Tim Storrs and Irizarry roped back-to-back two-out, RBI doubles while senior
Nick Calhoun scampered home on a wild pitch for the first run of the frame.
Davis would pitch his way out of bases loaded jams in the fifth and sixth, before Robert Morris finally broke through against the sophomore in the seventh when Andy Roen laced a two-out, two-run double to cut the Lakers' advantage to 4-3. Davis would escape any further damage, getting Tim Ryan to fly out to end the game.
Davis picked up his first win of the season, allowing three runs on eight hits in a complete-game effort.
The Lakers will look to continue their winning ways on Tuesday when they travel to take on Purdue North Central in a doubleheader.
