PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Fynn Mewes converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute to help Roosevelt earn a 1-1 road draw Saturday against Lake Erie in Ohio.
It was a rough first half for the Lakers as the Storm carried most of the play and peppered the Roosevelt (2-0-2) net with 12 shot attempts. Cedrik Strupler stopped six of the seven that were on target, but had no chance on an intercepted back pass the Lake Erie attacker dribbled around the freshman keeper. Strupler finished with seven saves in the game.
The second half was far more even in shot attempts, but the Storm still edged out the Lakers 7-5. Roosevelt's pressure around the net paid off in the 71st minute when Andrea Mercanti was taken down trying to settle a ball in the penalty box. Mewes stepped up and converted from the spot for his fourth goal in four games.
Roosevelt had a chance to win the game on its final touch when Krystian Niziolek whipped a last-ditch cross into the penalty area. Noah Vasilev was able to win the ball, but his header glanced just wide of the post with two seconds left. Angelo Piech also had a shot that ripped off the crossbar in the first half.
UP NEXT: The Lakers are off for nearly two weeks before resuming their season on Sept. 17 against Parkside at 7 p.m. at Morris Field in the GLIAC opener.
