UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Roosevelt fell in three sets Friday night to Saginaw Valley State in a road Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match in Michigan.
It was a tough first set for the Lakers (5-7, 2-3 GLIAC) as they never led and lost 25-18 despite seven digs from Madison Howard. After the teams traded points on the first two serves, Roosevelt fell behind 9-4 and could not cut the deficit to within four points in the set.
The Lakers came out firing in the second set and raced out to a 10-3 lead with a 7-0 run on Abigail Wutka's service rotation. The sophomore served an ace then McKenzie Bernard scored consecutive kills to pad the lead. However, the Cardinals responded with an 18-4 run to turn the momentum and capture the set 25-19.
Roosevelt took its turn at a rally in the third set after falling behind by as much as 18-12. The Lakers scored nine of the 13 points after taking a timeout to bring the score within one, and eventually had two serves to win the set. However, Saginaw Valley State survived those two points and wound up with a 30-28 win to finish the sweep.
Aleksandra Barac and Alessia Isgro both had seven kills in the match to lead the Lakers offense. Howard had 16 digs to help on defense while three different Lakers were part of two of Roosevelt's five blocks in the match. Â
