ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Roosevelt closed out a near-perfect weekend on Sunday with a 1-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference draw with Michigan Tech on a rainy day at Morris Field.
The Huskies filled the stat sheet with a 33-8 advantage in shot attempts, but Kaylee Sarnicola and the Lakers defense was up to the task. Sarnicola stopped seven shots in the first half to keep the game scoreless, including a pair of diving stops in the middle of the half. She added 10 more in the second half for 17 total saves, the most for a Roosevelt goalkeeper since 2017.
The Lakers (1-4-3, 1-2-1 GLIAC) felt destined to head into halftime at 0-0 with Michigan Tech dominating much of the possession. However, in the final two minutes of the half, Roosevelt earned itself a corner kick and Karina Estrada sent a perfect cross into the mixer. Kenna Wisniewski rose above the rest of the heads to direct the ball to the ground, and it slipped into the goal for her first goal of the season.
Roosevelt was holding strong to start the second half, blocking shots and keeping the Huskies away from the danger areas. Sarnicola made a couple of key saves to preserve the lead early, but she could do nothing about the only Michigan Tech goal of the game. A shot from the Huskies looked to be going wide until a cruel deflection off a Roosevelt defender caromed the ball into the net.
Dayami Arias had two chances at the winner late in the second half, but both were stopped by a diving Michigan Tech goalkeeper. She was the only Roosevelt player to finish with multiple shots on frame among the five the Lakers had in the match.
