BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Roosevelt closed out a tough weekend Sunday with two losses to Ferris State in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader in Michigan.
The Bulldogs claimed the first game of the day 8-0 in five innings before taking the second game 6-1. The Lakers (10-34, 4-20 GLIAC) had five combined hits between the two games led by two from Ella Dvoracek.
An early home run provided all the offense Ferris State would need in the opener as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Catie Luzzi worked around a one-out double in the second inning to keep Ferris State off the scoreboard. However, the Bulldogs added a two-out run in the third then added two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Lakers took the early lead in the second game of the day with some crafty baserunning. After Madisyn Schrad led off the second inning with a single, she stole second and moved up to third on a wild pitch. Lundin Cornelius watched a 3-2 offering miss for ball four and took off for first base. The freshman then rounded the corner and forced Ferris State into a rundown situation, giving Schrad enough time to score on the play.
Dvoracek twice worked herself into scoring position in the game, but was stranded on the base paths both times. In the first inning, she led off with a single then moved up to third when Kennedy Calderon reached on an error. In the third, Dvoracek again singled then stole second before being left there.
Ferris State scored five runs in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and finish off the sweep.
UP NEXT: The Lakers close their season next week with a pair of doubleheaders against Parkside. The two teams meet Wednesday at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont then will play Saturday in Wisconsin.
