KENOSHA, Wis. – Roosevelt took the lead three times Thursday, but ultimately fell 8-6 in 11 tough innings against Parkside in the first game of their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series in Kenosha, Wis.
The Lakers came within three outs of their first conference win of the season before chaos struck in the bottom of the ninth. The Rangers scored two runs through a walk, double, sacrifice bunt and a passed ball before Aramis Salmeron came on to record the final two outs. Roosevelt (9-32, 0-17 GLIAC) was nearly out of the 11th inning as well unscathed before a 1-2 pitch was lifted into left field to prolong the inning for the walk-off home run.
Parkside struck first with a run in the first frame, but Kaden Foran turned in a second consecutive quality start for the Lakers. He finished his day after 6.1 innings with six hits and two earned runs allowed as well as three strikeouts. He also did not walk any of the 28 hitters he faced, although he did hit two batters.
Foran's run support came in the fourth with Alejandro Munoz leading off the inning with a single into right field. CJ Chalk replaced him at first base after a sacrifice bunt attempt before Kyle Jannenga sent the first pitch he saw up the middle to move Chalk to third. Cooper Ohlson cleared the bases with a triple then scored himself on a wild pitch.
Roosevelt re-took the lead in the seventh inning after Parkside tied the game with two unearned runs off Foran in the fifth. Quinn O'Bryan did most of the work for this run after starting the frame with a single through the left side. The sophomore shortstop moved up to second base on a wild pitch then waited out the shortstop before moving to third on a groundout. Munoz then supplied the single up the middle that allowed O'Bryan to trot home.
The lead didn't last long as Parkside led off the seventh with the tying homer, but Roosevelt made one final move in the top of the ninth. O'Bryan again led off the inning with a single and Ian Bagaconza moved him over with a sacrifice bunt. Tyler Ruete walked and Munoz grounded out to put runners on second and third with two away for the Lakers.
Chalk worked an eight-pitch walk to load the bases then Jack Hoh saw seven pitches before earning his free pass. Jannenga looked at strike one after a Parkside pitching change, but four straight balls after that brought in a second run on a bases-loaded walk.
O'Bryan went 3 for 6 with two runs scored as Roosevelt's leadoff hitter Thursday and nearly had an RBI as well. The shortstop almost added a fourth run to the Lakers' fourth inning with a double into deep left field, but Andrew Lucas was barely beat by the throw as he tried to score from first. Munoz ended up batting 4 for 6 after accounting for Roosevelt's only hit and base runner of the extra innings with his 11th-inning single. Â
