Hot Bats Earns Lakers Split Against Warriors

ROSEMONT – There was no slowing down the Roosevelt offense in the second game of Friday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Wayne State as the Lakers earned a split of the twinbill at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont.

Roosevelt was able to put runners in scoring position in the opening game, but the Lakers couldn't drive them home in a 5-0 loss. However, there was no issue in the second game with the Lakers (9-25, 3-11 GLIAC) pounding out 13 hits in an 11-1 run-rule win over the Warriors.

ROOSEVELT 11, WAYNE STATE 1

A two-out triple in the top of the first inning gave the Warriors the early lead, but that was the only danger Wayne State posed in the game. Roosevelt came through with three straight two-out hits to take a 2-1 lead and never looked back. The Lakers would score in all four innings they went to the plate, taking advantage of four Wayne State errors along the way.

Ella Dvoracek opened the bottom of the first by reaching on a throwing error, advancing to second base as the throw skipped to the wall behind first base. The junior moved to third base on a groundout then scored on Rebecca Urbaniak's sacrifice fly to right field.

Kennedy Calderon extended the frame with a single through the left side then Madisyn Schrad reached on a well-placed single to the shortstop. Sophia Barofsky found the gap in left-center field for an RBI single to give Roosevelt the lead, something that became a theme for the freshman.

Roosevelt broke open the game in the second inning with six runs on six hits while also getting assistance from a pair of Warriors miscues. Cassidy Sullivan dumped a single into right field to start the frame then moved to second when the right fielder overthrew first base trying to throw her out. Marissa Quintero laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to set up Dvoracek hitting a single off the pitcher's glove on a comebacker. Lundin Cornelius hit a two-run single into left field that turned into a little-league home run when the left fielder misplayed the ball and allowed Cornelius to round the bases.

Urbaniak singled and Schrad walked to again bring Barofsky to the plate, and the freshman sent a single up the middle to drive in another run. Ava Kaspar walked then Sullivan returned to the dish and delivered a two-run single into center field.

Dvoracek singled to kick off the third, but was replaced on the base paths by Cornelius, who promptly stole second. Urbaniak reached when the first baseman failed to catch a throw from the shortstop, and Cornelius scooted home as the ball rolled away.

After Schrad was hit by a pitch, Barofsky returned to the plate and hit her third RBI single of the game with a cue shot that hit inside the right-field line. In the fourth, Cornelius drove in the Lakers' final run of the game with a seeing-eye single through the left side that scored Dvoracek.

It was all in support of Kailey Hancock, who scattered six hits across her five innings in the circle for the Lakers. After stranding the first-inning triple, no other Warriors runner reached third base against the junior, who also finished with one strikeout.

WAYNE STATE 5, ROOSEVELT 0

Riley Czarnecki took the tough-luck loss for the Lakers after weaving her way out of trouble numerous times in the game. After allowing a triple to start the game, Czarnecki allowed just one more hit and picked up three outs with runners on second and third to keep the damage to a single run.

The score stayed 1-0 into the fifth inning despite Roosevelt having golden chances to tie the game. In the second, Calderon singled and Schrad followed with a double to start the frame, only for Roosevelt to leave the pair stranded. The Lakers moved Dvoracek to third in the third inning but didn't score then left the junior on second after a fifth-inning double.

Wayne State moved a runner to third in the second inning only for Czarnecki to induce a fly ball to Caitlin Williams in left field. The Warriors added two unearned runs in the fifth courtesy of a Roosevelt error to start the frame. They then added a run in the sixth and seventh to add insurance markers.

Roosevelt had a chance in the sixth to get back into the game when Urbaniak led off the frame with a triple into left-center field. However, a fly ball was too shallow in center field for Urbaniak to score then a strikeout and groundout kept the Lakers scoreless. Dvoracek did finish 2 for 4 in the first game to end the day 5 for 8 overall against the Warriors.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday when it hosts Saginaw Valley State for a doubleheader in Rosemont. The ceremony will take place between games of the doubleheader with game one scheduled to start at noon.
