Roosevelt Swept By Eckerd In Florida

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Roosevelt's spring break trip in Florida hit another speed bump Thursday with a pair of losses at Eckerd in a doubleheader against the host Tritons.

Eckerd took the opening game 9-3 with a late-inning surge to hold off a Roosevelt rally. The weather stopped the second game in the sixth inning, making it an official game with the Lakers (2-9) falling 22-0.

The Lakers struck in their first at-bats courtesy of Jack Hoh's double into the gap to score Ian Bagaconza. After Eckerd answered in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game, Roosevelt came back to retake the lead in the third. CJ Chalk opened with a single down the right-field line then stole second on strike three to Bagaconza. The junior from nearby Tampa, Fla. took third as well, setting the stage for him to score on a sacrifice fly from Alejandro Munoz.

The Tritons scored four in the bottom of the third on a grand slam, but the Lakers again had a response in the next frame. Maxwell Bowers lined a double to centerfield then stole third base before scoring on an RBI groundout from Andrew Lucas.

Quinn O'Bryan had a sixth-inning single for Roosevelt's only other hit in the game as Eckerd scored once in the fifth and three times in the sixth to put the game away.

Munoz was a bright spot for the Lakers in this contest, recording hits in both of his at-bats while also drawing a walk. The free pass came in the first inning, and the infielder stole second base before being left on the base paths. Munoz singled to lead off the fourth inning then followed Bagaconza's single with another single in the sixth.

Payton Kaiser looked sharp in the first two innings to keep the Tritons off the board. He worked around a two-out walk in the first inning then picked up the final two outs of the second with a pickoff and pop up after letting two runners on base. The defense, though, fell apart in the third with three errors allowing Eckerd to score nine runs, seven of which were unearned.

The Tritons scored 11 runs in the fourth inning to blow the game open and added two more in the fifth. They also had the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth when the weather intervened.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt begins a three-game series with Saint Leo, located just outside Tampa, Fla., with a doubleheader Friday starting at noon.
