MELBOURNE, Fla. – Roosevelt was swept Wednesday in a pair of games at the USSSA Space Coast Games in Florida.
The Lakers started bright and early against St. Cloud State, but fell 5-0 to the Huskies in a rematch of a game played two weeks ago in Rosemont. Roosevelt (6-10) then dropped a 9-3 decision to Findlay in the first ever meeting with the Oilers.
ST. CLOUD STATE 5, ROOSEVELT 0
Roosevelt had chances early to put some pressure on St. Cloud State, but that critical hit eluded the Lakers. In the bottom of the first, Kendall Pearson drew a walk and Cassidy Sullivan laid down a gorgeous bunt for a single. The throw to try to get Sullivan at first allowed Pearson to move to third and Sullivan advanced to second as well.
After the Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, the Lakers had chances to strike back immediately. Sophia Barofsky walked then was replaced on the base paths by Ella Dvoracek on a fielder's choice. Dvoracek was caught stealing before Pearson delivered a single into left field, and the threat ended there.
Rebecca Urbaniak had a leadoff single in the fourth inning as well after the Huskies doubled their lead to 4-0 in the top half of the frame.
FINDLAY 9, ROOSEVELT 3
Dvoracek went 2 for 4 at the top of the lineup for the Lakers, but Roosevelt dug itself too deep of a hole against the Oilers. Findlay scored twice in the second inning then tacked on four more runs in the third to take a 6-0 lead into the fourth.
Roosevelt's offense found some life in the fifth inning with Barofsky opening the frame with a triple into left centerfield. Libby Kreykes worked a walk with the fourth ball evading the catcher for a wild pitch that allowed Barofsky to score. Dvoracek switched places with Kreykes on a fielder's choice to bring Pearson to the plate.
Pearson hit a two-out single into left field then was able to advance to third and score Dvoracek after a fielding error in the outfield. A throwing error on the same play also allowed Pearson to complete her trip around the bases to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Yet Findlay scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on one more in the sixth to clinch the win.
UP NEXT: The Lakers will have Thursday off to recuperate before facing Concordia St. Paul and Southern New Hampshire on Friday.
