MELBOURNE, Fla. – Roosevelt dropped a pair of heartbreaking games Monday on the first day of the team's spring-break trip to the USSSA Space Coast Games in Florida.
The Lakers (5-7) fell 11-7 in the first game of the day to Jamestown after a furious seventh-inning rally fell short. Roosevelt then lost 2-1 to Mary in the nightcap in a pitchers duel.
JAMESTOWN 11, ROOSEVELT 7
Roosevelt scored twice in the first inning after the first three batters all recorded hits off the Jamestown starter. Ella Dvoracek hit an infield single then scored on an error by the right fielder that allowed Rebecca Urbaniak to reach second after her single. Kendall Pearson followed with her own single, but a throwing error allowed Urbaniak to come around to score as well.
Jamestown picked up one in the second then added two more in the third to take its first lead of the game. The Lakers, though, tied the game in the fourth with their first RBI of the day as Sophia Barofsky capped a streak of three straight hits with a single to left field that scored Ava Kaspar.
The Jimmies took a big lead with six runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth, but Roosevelt kept the game going in the bottom of the sixth. The Lakers needed a run to force a seventh inning, and Kennedi Robien began the rally by reaching on an error. Kaspar followed with a single into centerfield that allowed Robien to round the bases and score.
The Lakers put themselves in position to make some noise in the seventh when Cassidy Sullivan began the frame with a single. The sophomore then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball before Madisyn Schrad worked her walk. Sullivan scored on a double steal that moved Schrad to second, and Dvoracek hit a single that put runners on the corners. An error allowed Urbaniak to reach base and Schrad to score then a wild pitch moved everyone up 60 feet.
Unfortunately for Roosevelt, the next three batters all were retired, though not before Dvoracek stole home. The Lakers finished with just two RBI on their seven hits and nine hits and were led by multi-hit games from Dvoracek and Kaspar.
MARY 2, ROOSEVELT 1
Riley Czarnecki struck out four and allowed just two hits, but a pair of unearned runs cost the Lakers. After 1-2-3 innings from both sides in the first, Kaspar led off the second inning with a single and pinch-runner Marissa Quintero stole second base. Sullivan laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner, but Quintero was tagged out at home on the next batter to end that threat.
The Marauders scored in the third inning when they recorded both of their hits against Czarnecki. Neither team produced much offense until the sixth when Caitlin Williams worked a one-out walk then stole second base. Urbaniak delivered with a single that scored the speedy Williams to tie the game.
Roosevelt threatened again in the seventh when Barofsky delivered a two-out single and Isis Enriquez followed with a single of her own. Libby Kreykes' single could have loaded the bases, but Barofsky tried to score on the deep grounder and was tagged out. Mary then scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh to earn the walk-off win.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt has two more games Tuesday at the Space Coast Games, facing West Virginia Wesleyan and Walsh in Florida.
