Lakers Deliver Win To Close Out Stay At RussMatt

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Roosevelt closed its stay at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida on Monday with a 9-3 win over Davis & Elkins.

The Lakers (2-6) dropped a pair of contests Sunday in tough fashion, losing 16-15 to Northwood on a walk-off before falling 9-3 to Rockhurst after another late-inning rally.

ROOSEVELT 9, DAVIS & ELKINS 3

After the Senators scored one run in the first inning, the rest of the game belonged to the Lakers. Roosevelt scored three runs of its own in its first at-bats with CJ Chalk leading off and almost tying the game by himself. The outfielder hit a single to left field then promptly stole second and third bases to put himself 90 feet away.

Maxwell Bowers worked a walk then stole second, putting him in position to also advance on Alejandro Munoz's RBI ground out to second base. Ian Bagaconza gave the Lakers the lead with an RBI single and three batters later, Kyle Jannenga hit a single of his own to score Cooper Ohlson.

Chalk again led the charge in the second inning with a leadoff single, but he didn't get a chance to steal a base before Bowers slapped a triple into right field to extend the lead to 4-1. An error allowed Munoz to reach and Bowers to score and the margin remained at 5-1 for the next three innings.

Munoz hit a single to score Chalk in the sixth inning then Jack Hoh doubled to plate Bagaconza in the seventh. Another Davis & Elkins error in the eighth inning allowed Bowers to score on a Munoz drive to right field then Ohlson brought home Munoz on a sacrifice fly. Munoz finished with three RBI on just one hit while Bowers and Chalk both scored three times. Bagaconza was 3 for 4 in the game and Hoh went 3 for 5 with both players driving in one run each.

Anthony Sorrentino was the star on the mound for the Lakers after taking over in the third inning. The right-handed freshman threw seven innings of relief while allowing just four hits and striking out six. He nearly escaped the game unscathed after retiring the first two batters in the ninth, but the Senators scored twice in the ninth inning off two hits.

NORTHWOOD 16, ROOSEVELT 15

Roosevelt rode the roller coaster in its first game of the Florida trip against the Timberwolves. Northwood jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the first and two more in the third, all of which came off home runs. Yet, the Lakers responded with three runs in the fourth on a Jack Hoh two-run blast to left field and an RBI single from Chalk that plated Quinn O'Bryan.

A quiet fifth inning was followed by a superb display of plate discipline in the sixth from the Lakers, who drew five consecutive walks to take the lead. Jannenga drove in a run with a single and O'Bryan followed with a double to bring in two more runs. Chalk added two more runs with a single through the left side before two more walks added the final run of Roosevelt's eight-run frame.

Bagaconza led off the seventh with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on an O'Bryan single. Northwood clawed back to 12-11 in the bottom of the frame and could have had the tying run on third if not for some strong defense from the Lakers. Bowers hit O'Bryan as his cut-off man on a double and O'Bryan fired to Munoz covering third for the inning-ending out on the base paths.

The Lakers built some more cushion for themselves in the eighth inning with a three-run frame that again began with Chalk being walked. A stolen base and throwing error put him in position for Bowers to single him in with a stolen base and passed ball setting the stage for a triple from Munoz. Bagaconza had the single that plated Munoz and restored a four-run lead for the Lakers.

However, the Timberwolves scored three times in the eighth before a pair of Roosevelt errors allowed Northwood to reach base for the game-winning hit in the ninth. Bagaconza finished 4 for 5 with three runs and a pair of RBI while Chalk went 2 for 5 with two runs scored and three RBI. O'Bryan also drove in three runs on a 3 for 6 day for the shortstop.

ROCKHURST 9, ROOSEVELT 3

The Hawks entered the contest receiving votes in the latest coaches' poll, and took an early lead with a first-inning homer. They added three more in the fourth as the Lakers offense struggled to come alive. Although Roosevelt drew three walks in the first seven innings, it wasn't able to cause much of a threat until the seventh.

Bagaconza earned a walk with one out and two batters later, Christian Degroot smacked a double into left field. It was the third time in the game the Lakers advanced a runner to second with the other two coming on stolen bases. However, it would take another inning for the Lakers to finally strike on the scoreboard.

The Lakers attacked the Rockhurst bullpen and scored three runs in the eighth off a new pitcher to pull within a run. Chalk drew a one-out walk then advanced on a groundout before the next three Lakers worked walks themselves. Bagaconza's free pass allowed the first run to come across for Roosevelt, and Ruete followed with a two-run single into the outfield.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt begins the road game portion of its Florida trip on Tuesday with a single game against Florida Southern at 5 p.m.
