Stovring Fires Lakers Past Cougars In Five

CHICAGO – Jonathan Stovring was an efficient machine to help Roosevelt eke out a five-set win over Concordia Chicago on Saturday at the Goodman Center.

The junior middle blocker tied his career high with 13 kills while nearly taking over the program record for hitting percentage in a match by hitting .706. He was at his best over the final three sets with three kills in each of the three games and all four of his blocks during those sets. He also had three digs and two aces to help lead the Lakers offense.

Roosevelt (6-4) looked to be on cruise control in the first set after it opened up a 19-14 lead with a diverse attack. However, the Cougars captured 11 of the final 12 points in the set to rally for a 25-20 victory.

The Lakers were not messing around to start the second set and it was Stovring in the middle of the revival at the beginning. He began the set with a kill then stepped up to the service line and powered Roosevelt to a 6-0 lead with both of his aces. Concordia never inched closer than four points as Roosevelt cruised to a 25-16 win.

Concordia fell behind 4-0 in the third set before rallying again and edging out a 25-22 win. The introduction of Simone Augugliaro in the fourth set paid off for the Lakers as he had four kills to complement five from Mark Zmojdzin in forcing a fifth set with another 25-16 victory. The Lakers then took the fifth set 15-8 behind Stovring's three kills and two blocks to move to 6-0 at home.

Zmojdzin led the Lakers with 15 kills and hit .375 while Martino Bertagnoli recorded 39 assists to conduct the offense. Bertagnoli also sniped six kills on seven attempts by picking his moments to attack on the second hit for points. Braxton McGonigle had three solo blocks and Simone Mondin dove for 10 digs while Bertagnoli finished with eight digs.

UP NEXT: The Lakers welcome Wisconsin Stevens Point to the Goodman Center for the first time Friday in a return trip for the Pointers from Roosevelt's journey north last season. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
