ALLENDALE, Mich. – Roosevelt battled No. 3 Grand Valley State until the bitter end of an 80-56 loss to the reigning national champions in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup in Michigan.
The game was far closer than the final score would indicate as Roosevelt was within 10 points for most of the contest until Grand Valley State went on a late 13-0 run. Marie Outlay paced the visiting Lakers with 15 points and six rebounds and Kelly Boyle joined the junior in double figures with 11 points and dished out a team-best four assists.
Boyle scored nine points in the second quarter, including a jumper with 3:22 left in the half that gave the Lakers (6-16, 5-10 GLIAC) a slim one-point lead. Although the third-ranked Lakers stretched the lead to nine in the second quarter after Boyle's bucket, the junior executed the old-fashioned three-point play in the final minute to cut the deficit to six at halftime.
The second quarter also featured more history for Outlay as she picked up three steals to break the single-season record for the third straight year. The Wisconsin native finished with five thefts to sit at 92 steals with five games left as she attempts to become the first Roosevelt player to have 100 steals in a season.
As much as Grand Valley State tried to pull away in the third quarter, Roosevelt was right there to keep the deficit at a reasonable margin heading into the fourth quarter. Â The visitors trimmed the deficit down to eight in the fourth quarter before Grand Valley State's run to end the game. Aubrey Leonard scored six of her eight points in the second half to help with the Lakers' comeback attempt.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt's road trip continues Saturday at noon with a matchup against Davenport.
