KENOSHA, Wis. – Fynn Mewes fooled the goalkeeper on a penalty kick in the 60th minute for the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Parkside in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinals Saturday in Wisconsin.
Michael Sarna was tripped up in the penalty box with the score tied at 1, and Mewes strode up to take the kick. He calmly sent the goalie the wrong way and rolled the ball over the grass into the corner for the lead. It was the German's ninth goal of the season, and he also added an assist earlier Saturday for his third match with a goal and assist this year.
The Lakers went down in the match in the 12th minute, the earliest goal Roosevelt has conceded this season. However, it was a minor blip on an otherwise dominant first-half for the fifth-seeded Lakers, who outshot the fourth-seeded Rangers 7-3 in the opening 45 minutes. Eventually, Mewes found Krystian Niziolek, who tied the game in the 37th minute.
Cedrik Strupler was kept on his toes with four saves, stopping two shots in each half. As the Rangers pressed towards the end of the game, Strupler was busy and Parkside finished with an 8-2 edge in attempts over the last 45 minutes.
Roosevelt advances to play Saginaw Valley State on Friday at 10 a.m. in University Center, Mich. The Cardinals won 1-0 earlier this season on a last-minute goal and the two teams drew 0-0 at Morris Field three weeks ago.
This is the fifth straight season the Lakers have advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament and they are 2-2 in previous semifinals appearances. Roosevelt is 1-1-2 overall in semifinals away from home, including 1-1-1 in true road games.
