CHICAGO – Roosevelt could not sustain its first-set momentum in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback Saturday to Wayne State at the Goodman Center.
The Lakers (5-10, 2-6 GLIAC) trailed for most of the first set despite coming close to overtaking the Warriors at various points. Roosevelt took a timeout with Wayne State holding a 16-14 edge, then transformed with four straight points to take its first lead. Although the Warriors clawed back to within a point, the Lakers held on for a 25-22 win.
After hitting .281 in the opening set, Roosevelt could not replicate that success in the next two sets. Wayne State breezed to 25-10 and 25-11 wins to take the lead in the match, and take the wind out of the home team's sails.
However, the Lakers were not done just yet and presented a spirited challenge in the fourth set. Yet a 5-0 run to break an 11-11 deadlock proved to be the difference as the Warriors closed out the match with a 25-16 win in the fourth set.
Abigail Wutka led the Lakers with six kills, and both Imani Lee and Vivienne Merchant ended up with five finishes each. Neviah Johnson was all over the floor and collected a team-best 19 digs and Lee chipped in 12 digs as well.
UP NEXT: The Lakers hit the road again to face off with Grand Valley State on Friday evening before returning home on Oct. 10 to face Lake Superior State at 2 p.m. at the Goodman Center.
