Strong Defensive Effort Not Enough For Lakers

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Roosevelt's defense stood tall Saturday in a 27-10 loss to Northern Michigan in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action in the Upper Peninsula.

The Lakers defense swarmed the backfield on numerous occasions, registering three sacks and forcing five fumbles in the game. However, Roosevelt (5-3, 1-3 GLIAC) recovered just two of those loose balls and neither takeaway led to any points from the offense. Two of Northern Michigan's four scoring drives began in Roosevelt's half of the field after a Lakers turnover and the Lakers kept the Wildcats from scoring in half of their six red-zone trips.

Sean Sample began the game with a 25-yard field goal on the opening possession after Roosevelt stalled out inside the Northern Michigan 10-yard line. The Wildcats marched down to score, but missed the extra point. The Lakers then returned the favor with a seven-play, 62-yard drive that ended with Carl Bew's 11-yard touchdown run.

Roosevelt maintained the 10-6 edge into the second half, but the Wildcats put a challenge into that when they marched down the field to open the second half. CJ Ameachi made sure Northern Michigan wouldn't score when he punched the ball free and Brandon Harvey fell on top of it.

Ameachi had one of Roosevelt's three sacks and was credited with two forced fumbles while Michael Pryor forced a fumble on his sack, but the Wildcats fell on the ball. Angelo Arnold also had a sack for the Lakers while Harvey led the way with 12 tackles and both fumble recoveries for Roosevelt.

UP NEXT: The Lakers return home next weekend for a Halloween evening affair against Grand Valley State at 6 p.m. at Morris Field.
