Detroit, Mich. – The Roosevelt football team spoiled Wayne State's Homecoming festivities on Saturday afternoon with a 33-18 victory at Tom Adams Field. The win moved the Lakers to 5-1 overall on the season and 1-1 in the GLIAC.
For a second straight game Lakers wide receiver
DJ Simmons Jr. hauled in three touchdown passes. The senior, who has now caught a touchdown in each of the last five outings, set a new season-best with 167 yards on seven receptions.
Roosevelt steadily built a 24-0 advantage through the opening three quarters before the Warriors rallied to pull within a single possession late in the game. On a critical third-and-one with 2:11 remaining, senior
Carl Bew, who provided a spark throughout the game in a dual-threat package of plays at quarterback, entered to take the snap and promptly ran through the Wayne State defense for a game-sealing 37-yard touchdown. Bew finished with a team-best 105 yards on the ground.
Sophomore quarterback
Tony Chahino took a majority of the snaps, throwing for 294 yards and the three touchdown strikes to Simmons.
Chahino opened the scoring against the Warriors, connecting with Simmons from 49 yards out midway through the opening quarter. Freshman
Sean Sample added a 34-yard field goal in the second quarter to stake the Lakers to a 10-0 halftime advantage. Chahino found Simmons twice more in the third quarter on passes of eight and 39 yards. Roosevelt's only fourth quarter points prior to the Bew run came via a safety on an intentional grounding call on Wayne State in the endzone.
Junior
Khalil Nichols led the Roosevelt defense with his second interception of the season in addition to a team-best 10 tackles and a pass break up. The Lakers sacked Wayne State quarterback Ethan Lane five times and forced him into a pair of interceptions.
Roosevelt's next game is back at Morris Field on Saturday, October 17 as the Lakers welcome nationally-ranked Davenport for a 1:00 pm kickoff.
