CHICAGO – Roosevelt put forth a clinically dominant effort Saturday afternoon to dispatch of Barton in straight sets at the Goodman Center.
The Lakers (4-3) dominated from the outset, racing out to a 7-1 lead in the first set and forcing a Bulldogs timeout. The opening set ended in a 25-18 triumph, as did the second set, though the Lakers were more methodical in pulling away. Roosevelt then bookended the match with a 7-1 run to seal the third set 25-17
Mark Zmojdzin had three kills during that first run in the match and Kajetan Bieniek added a kill and a block during that stretch. The two set the tone for the Lakers with their powerful attacks and strong defensive positioning. Zmojdzin led Roosevelt with 12 kills while Bieniek was not far behind with 10 to go along with two assisted blocks.
As a team, the Lakers were an efficient .388 while limiting the Bulldogs to a .066 hitting percentage in the match. Ashton Stage had three assisted blocks and an emphatic solo stuff in the match, with his solo rejection coming at a critical point in the third set. Zmojdzin gave the Lakers a boost with three aces while Martino Bertagnoli dished out 34 assists.
Bertagnoli did a wonderful job at spreading the love to his teammates as six players besides from the sophomore setter had a kill in the match. Jonathan Stovring had eight swings and finished six points with kills while Andre Cippiciani had four kills, all of which were electrifying.
Roosevelt was even in position to use its bench in the final two sets and the reserves energized the team with their play. Keawe Ayau made his debut and registered a kill in the second set then Erik Gonzalez got up for a block in the third set in his first action of the season.
