UNIVERSITY CENTER, MICH. – All five Roosevelt starters finished in double figures in a tight 91-80 loss to Saginaw Valley State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday in Michigan.
The Lakers were led by 20 points from Dante Sawyer, who made his way to the free-throw line for most of his points. The senior shot 12 of 14 from the foul line to lead Roosevelt's parade to the stripe throughout the game. Although the Lakers (2-17, 1-11 GLIAC) made just five 3-pointers in the contest, they were able to stay in the game by making 31 of 35 free throws.
Hamahrie Bowers had 18 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds while Davon Smith-Johnson added 17 points and six boards. Kaleim Taylor made all six of his free throws to finish on 13 points and Mikey West pushed his way to 10 points and three assists.
Roosevelt took its only lead of the game with 4:32 left in the first half when Bowers stole the ball and raced to the other end for a layup. After the basket put the Lakers in front 28-26, the Cardinals went on a 15-3 run to end the half. Roosevelt fought back in the second half to within single digits several times, including trimming the deficit to six with 13 minutes left.
