HACKENSACK, N.J. – Roosevelt's attempt at a comeback were halted in the fourth set Saturday against Fairleigh Dickinson in a non-conference match in New Jersey.
The Lakers dropped a back-and-forth first set 25-19 then fell 25-18 in the second to find themselves with their backs to the wall. Roosevelt (2-3) roared to a 25-21 win in the third set to prolong the match, but it could not capitalize on the momentum and lost 25-19 in the final set.
The opening set featured eight ties and five lead changes with neither team able to pull away in the early going. Mark Zmojdzin had six of his team-best 18 kills in the first set and swung a .667 hitting percentage, but it was not enough in the first set.
After never leading in the second set, the Lakers didn't trail in the third, cruising after scoring the first four points of the set. Zmojdzin had six more kills and was complemented by three kills each from Braxton McGonigle and Jonathan Stovring. The fourth set was another tight one until the Knights pulled away at the end.
Andre Cippiciani had eight kills in the match while Stovring finished with seven. Martino Bertagnoli dished out 22 assists after coming off the bench in the second set while Zmojdzin also led the team with eight digs and had Roosevelt's only ace of the match. Â
