ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Roosevelt's attack started off the season strong, but it was not enough as No. 9 Lewis beat the Lakers in straight sets Tuesday in the season opener in Romeoville.

The Lakers (0-1) were competitive with the Flyers for the first half of the opening set despite never leading. Ashton Stage smashed three kills on three attempts in that first set to keep Lewis within striking distance before the Flyers finished the set 25-17.

In the second set, Roosevelt took advantage of its opportunities by hitting .438 in the game led by three kills from Kajetan Bieniek. However, Mark Zmojdzin's set-opening kill was the only lead the Lakers would muster as Lewis ran away with a 25-13 victory.

Roosevelt again scored the first point of the third set, this time off a kill from Jonathan Stovring, but once again, Lewis was able to pull away for a 25-15 win. Stovring finished with four kills on seven swings in the match and served up the only Roosevelt ace.

The Lakers hit .212 in the match and were led by six kills from Bieniek and Zmojdzin, who also led Roosevelt with seven digs. Martino Bertagnoli made his Lakers debut after missing the 2025 season with a knee injury and dished out 17 assists.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt opens its home slate this weekend with non-conference matches against Barry on Friday and Saturday at the Goodman Center. Friday's match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. and the two teams will square off at 2 p.m. on Saturday in downtown Chicago.
