ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Roosevelt's rallies came a little too late as Lewis managed to sweep the Lakers in non-conference action Tuesday night in Romeoville, Ill.
On several occasions Tuesday, the Lakers (1-12) managed to close a seemingly insurmountable gap, but each time, Roosevelt could not fully catch up to the hosts. In the opening set, a 10-point deficit was trimmed to two before Lewis held on for a 25-19 win. In the next set, Roosevelt cut a seven-point Lewis lead to two before the Flyers won 25-18. Then in the third set, Lewis won 25-21 after the set was tied 12 times and the lead changed hands six times.
An early Flyers service error made the score 7-6 in the opening set before Lewis reeled off the next nine points.
Abigail Wutka ended that stretch with a kill, and the teams then traded points with Lewis again serving long.
Alessia Isgro stepped to the service line and won three straight points off a pair of
Lillian Hallahan kills and an ace.
Hallahan played the best match of her freshman year Tuesday, with much of her offensive damage coming in that opening set. She had four kills and an ace in the first set to help Roosevelt turn a 16-6 deficit into a 20-18 hole.
Nekane Parera added a kill of her own to make it 21-19, but the Lakers dropped the final four points of the first set.
The second set started out as a back-and-forth affair, but the Flyers were quickly able to string points together in a manner the Lakers struggled to do. A kill from Hallahan, two from
Isa Grana then an ace from
Cydney Martinez narrowed the gap to 19-17 late in the set, but a service error and poor set from Roosevelt allowed Lewis to pull away.
Roosevelt showed plenty of fight and moxie in the third set, especially when it looked like Lewis might again run away with the win. The Flyers rattled off four straight points to break a 12-12 tie, but after a Lakers timeout, Isgro supplied a kill and a few points later,
Jessica Maier served up back-to-back aces to make it 18-17 in Lewis' favor. Roosevelt had three one-point leads late in the set, but Lewis countered each time, and eventually won the key points down the stretch.
Hallahan entered the contest with eight total kills and 9.5 total points this season, and she matched both totals Tuesday. In addition to her eight kills, the freshman from Geneva, Ill. had an ace, 10 digs and was part of the Lakers' only block of the evening.
Regan Miessler added nine digs on defense while Grana and Isgro both had six kills to help offensively. Maier dished out 11 assists and served three aces as well.
UP NEXT: The Lakers return home for a two-game homestand at the Goodman Center this weekend. Roosevelt starts Friday against Davenport before facing No. 16 Ferris State on Saturday in downtown Chicago.
