MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Roosevelt's women's tennis team opened its dual season with an emphatic 7-0 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering on Sunday in Wisconsin.
The Lakers were dominant all over the court and rolled past the Raiders with ease. Roosevelt won the doubles point courtesy of the duos of
Zeynep Barut and
Nathalie Ramazzini as well as
Malena Moya and
Milena Novikova each winning 6-0 in their doubles matches.
Esther Magnusson and
Ximena Mercado won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles to further flex the Lakers' control.
In singles action, the six Lakers players dropped a combined three games with three matches ending in 6-0, 6-0 scorelines. Novikova won 6-0, 4-0 due to her opponent unfortunately needing to retire from the match due to injury. Magnusson won with double bagels at No. 1 singles, a feat matched by Moya at the No. 5 slot and
Lara Sener at the No. 6 position.
Barut easily won the opening set 6-2 before racing to a 6-0 win in the second set at No. 2. Then Ramazzini won 6-1, 6-0 to close out the match for the Lakers.
The men also played the Raiders on Sunday, but fell 4-3 in a dual that featured two singles matches going the full three sets. The Lakers dropped the doubles point despite
David Hofmann and
Raul Vilarino winning 6-3 at the third doubles spot.
Vilarino quickly evened the score for Roosevelt with a dominant 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles. Then
Abhay Singh won at No. 5 singles 7-5, 6-1 to put the Lakers in the lead before
Jules Remeau easily won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. With a 3-1 lead, the Lakers battled on the other three courts, but could not pull out the victory.
Chakib Madcur fell 7-5 in the second set while both
Juan Pablo Espinosa and Demille Scarabello lost in the third set supertiebreaker.
UP NEXT: Both teams return to action at the ITA Regionals with the men heading to Grand Valley State on Friday and the women traveling to Davenport on Oct. 3 for the marquee singles event in the region.
