CHICAGO – Roosevelt's early goal did not stand up as Saint Xavier upset the Lakers 2-1 on Saturday night on the southside of Chicago.
The Lakers (2-1-1) controlled the game early, and it paid off with
Noah Vasilev driving a long ball right in stride for
Angelo Piech to corral and bury into the far corner. The 12
th-minute tally helped Roosevelt start on the right foot, but the momentum did not last long. The Cougars knotted up the game in the 37
th minute and finished the first half with a 9-5 edge in shot attempts while forcing four saves out of
Eric Carvajal.
The second half was a bit more even with Saint Xavier holding the slim 9-8 edge in shot attempts, but the Cougars were the only team to score. A foul in the penalty area gave the Cougars a penalty kick in the 65
th minute that they converted, and the Lakers could not catch up. Carvajal made four more saves in the second half to finish with eight on the game while the Saint Xavier goalie finished with seven stops.
Oskar Schuster had two shots on goal in his first start of the young season and
Khori Miles had two shots as well, including a last-minute header that was saved.
CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES: Before departing for the match, the men's soccer team was honored at halftime of the Roosevelt football game for winning the 2024 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championship. Most of the title-winning team returned to receive their rings in front of a packed stadium of Roosevelt supporters.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt returns to Morris Field on Wednesday night for another rivalry match, this time hosting Lewis at 7 p.m. in Arlington Heights. The two teams played to a tense 2-2 draw last season after the Lakers rallied back from conceding two early goals. Â
