LANSING, Mich. – Roosevelt's first day at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament ended with a 19-3 loss to No. 15 Davenport on Thursday in Lansing, Mich.
The sixth-seeded Lakers (15-35) started the game to near perfection with
James Berry lashing a single to centerfield then stealing second base.
Kekoa Ogawa followed with a single of his own into right field to put the first two batters on the corners, but Roosevelt failed to capitalize.
Keagan Bobbitt found himself in some early trouble on the mound with runners on second and third with one out, but came up with a clutch strikeout to record the second out of the first inning. The junior lefty nearly escaped the jam on a weak groundball from the next batter, but a throwing error allowed two unearned runs to score.
Davenport, the top seed in the event, blew open the game with seven runs in the second inning then tacked on two more in the third. Berry and Ogawa both singled in their next at-bats as well and again found themselves on the corners before the Lakers recorded the final out. The Panthers added four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to complete their scoring.
Roosevelt's other best chance at scoring came in the top of the fourth when
Sebastian Casillas and
Kyle Jannenga led off with consecutive singles. However, neither runner could advance off first and second base before Davenport escaped again without allowing any runs. Casillas and
Luke Ulbert both also reached on walks in the game.
The Lakers finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning when
Nolan Boettcher hit a pinch-hit single to the right of the pitcher's mound. Berry followed with a double into the gap in right centerfield before Ogawa secured an RBI on an error by the Davenport shortstop.
Jack Kieffer followed with an RBI single into right field then Jannenga added an RBI single into center field.
UP NEXT: The Lakers will face off with Saginaw Valley State on Friday at 10 a.m. in Lansing in the first elimination game of the GLIAC Tournament.
