Lakers Split With Tigers, Berry's Streak Ends At 32 Games

BOURBONNIAS, Ill. – Roosevelt continued its hot streak Saturday with a split against Olivet Nazarene on the road despite James Berry's historic hitting streak ending at 32 games.

Berry hit a leadoff single to start the first game of the day in what proved to be his only official at-bat of the contest. The Lakers (14-31) struck for three runs in the first two innings, but allowed seven unanswered in a 7-3 loss. The hitting streak came to an end in the second game of the twinbill, but Roosevelt scored nine times in the seventh inning for a 15-4 run-rule shortened win over the Tigers.

The Lakers looked like they would be in full control for the first half of the game as Kegan Bobbitt set down the Tigers in order in the first two innings. Meanwhile, the offense was heating up with a pair of runs in the first and another one in the second.

Kekoa Ogawa followed up Berry's leadoff single in the first with a single of his own before Luke Ulbert grounded out on an unofficial sacrifice. Jack Kieffer picked up an RBI on an infield single that scored Berry and moved Ogawa over to third. With Sebastian Casillas standing at the plate, Kieffer took off for second base and Ogawa scored on an error from the Tigers catcher.

Berry started the offense in the second inning as well with a two-out walk. He stole second base to allow him to score on Ogawa's single up the middle to make it 3-0. The Tigers scratched across a run in the third and added two more in the fourth to tie the game.

It looked like Roosevelt would quickly answer in the top of the fifth, but Berry was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Ogawa's double. Then Ogawa was called out trying to advance on a Luke Ulbert groundball. Olivet Nazarene's first five batters all reached in the bottom of the frame as the Tigers plated three runs. The Lakers then traded a double play for a fourth run to give the Tigers a 7-3 edge.

Roosev-elt puts its first two runners on base in the sixth inning, but could not convert. The Lakers then loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning, but did not find the magic hit to tie the game. Ogawa finished the first game 3 for 4 with an RBI and run scored while Berry scored twice and reached in all four of his plate appearances.

Ogawa picked up where he left off in the second game with a single in the first inning. The senior stole second and moved to third on a groundout before Casillas ripped a double to score the game's first run.

In his second at-bat, Ogawa led off the third with a single then again stole second base to put himself in scoring position. A two-out error allowed Kyle Jannenga to reach then Kieffer delivered the RBI single to put the Lakers ahead. Roosevelt added a second run in the frame courtesy of a wild pitch to give itself a 3-1 lead.

Roosevelt seemingly began to run away with the game in the fourth without the ball leaving the infield. Jack Hoh and Berry were both hit by pitches, sandwiched around Harrison Kowalski's bunt single to load the bases. Ogawa drew a walk for an RBI and Casillas also drove in a run with a free pass. Jannenga picked up an RBI with a fielder's choice, beating out the double play at first base to put the Lakers ahead 6-1.

However, the Tigers added three runs of their own in the bottom half to keep pace. AJ Gliwa pitched a perfect fifth inning and worked around a single in the sixth to preserve the lead. He would go on to earn his third win of the season when the Lakers' bats steamrolled the Tigers in the seventh inning.

The Lakers scored nine times on seven hits in the seventh inning to cross over the run-rule mark. Casillas began the parade with a single then stole second, putting him in position to score on Jannenga's single. Quinn O'Bryan drove in Jannenga with a single and Olivet Nazarene loaded the bases by issuing a walk and hitting a batter. Berry hit an RBI sacrifice fly in his final at-bat of the game, officially ending the hitting streak.

Ogawa walked to load the bases again, then everyone moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. Ulbert plated the other two runners with a single then was followed by three straight singles, the last one being a two-run hit from Kieffer. Hoh picked up an RBI walk to make it 15-4 Roosevelt before Olivet Nazarene finally escaped the inning. Ogawa finished 2 for 3 in the second game to complete a five-game week hitting .632 with nine runs scored and seven RBIs.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt turns its attention to the final weekend of the regular season and a four-game series against Davenport that will be played at Saint Xavier starting on Friday.
