Roosevelt Controls GLIAC Split With Grand Valley State

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Roosevelt's offense was alive as the Lakers split its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon against Grand Valley State in Michigan.

The visiting Lakers (14-26, 8-14 GLIAC) nearly were able to pull off the sweep after dominating the opening game 5-0. Roosevelt didn't trail until the final hit of the game gave Grand Valley State a 4-3 walk-off win.

ROOSEVELT 5, GRAND VALLEY STATE 0
Kailey Hancock put together yet another incredible start for the Lakers, allowing just three hits and no runs in a complete-game effort. The sophomore did not allow a hit until the fifth inning while working around four walks in the game. The Chicago native is now 4-2 this month with a 2.75 ERA.

Roosevelt's offense managed just five hits, but took advantage of that contact as well as five walks to do its damage. It began in the third inning when Ella Dvoracek hit a bloop single and Kendall Pearson drew a walk. Athena Pomele-Pen drove in one run with a monstrous double to right field then Brynn Dvoracek drove in a second run with an RBI groundout.

The Lakers added three more runs in the fifth inning with a mixture of small ball and the power bats. Caitlin Williams and Ella Dvoracek hit back-to-back singles, and Pearson moved them over with a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Brynn Dvoracek drove a two-run double into the right centerfield gap.

Rebecca Urbaniak drew a two-out walk on a full count and Dvoracek ran on the pitch, stealing third base. However, the Grand Valley State catcher mis-threw the ball while trying to nab Dvoracek, allowing Brynn to score and Urbaniak to wind up at second.

The Roosevelt defense then closed out the game with ease after a clutch play from Pearson in the outfield. With one out and two runners on base, Grand Valley State hit a single up the middle that should have loaded the bases. Instead, the lead runner tried to score on the hit, and Pearson threw a strike to Libby Kreykes to tag out the runner.

Hancock then retired seven of the final eight batters to secure the win.

GRAND VALLEY STATE 4, ROOSEVELT 3
It was a tough finish for what was otherwise a strong outing for freshman Riley Czarnecki in the circle for Roosevelt. The Wisconsin native escaped runners on second and third with two outs in the first inning with a strikeout and cruised from there. She finished with six strikeouts and allowed just three earned runs in the loss.

Roosevelt jumped out to an early lead once again with Ella Dvoracek starting the game with a single then stealing second base. A groundout moved the sophomore to third base and Pomele-Pen drove her in with a groundball. The Lakers nearly added to their lead in the fourth when Brynn Dvoracek and Urbaniak had back-to-back singles, but Roosevelt couldn't move them off first and second.

Immediately after Grand Valley State tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, Roosevelt struck right back in the top of the fifth. Williams hit a single down the left-field line then Ella Dvoracek dropped a double into the gap in left centerfield. Pearson had an RBI groundout then Pomele-Pen poked a single up the middle to make it 3-1 Lakers.

Grand Valley State chipped away with a run in the fifth as well, but Czarnecki prevented more damage with a groundout to escape a jam. An error allowed the hosts to tie the game in the sixth, but Czarnecki responded by picking up an inning-ending double play.

The magic ran out in the bottom of the seventh as Grand Valley State was able to get an infield single with the bases loaded for the victory.

UP NEXT: The Lakers make the short trek to Hammond, Ind. on Saturday for a GLIAC doubleheader against Purdue Northwest that begins at 1 p.m.
