MELBOURNE, Fla. – A pair of strong pitching performances helped carry Roosevelt to a sweep of its two games Thursday at the Space Coast Games in Florida.
Kailey Hancock picked up her first career win in the opener by throwing 4.2 innings in the Lakers' 6-2 win over Goldey-Beacom.
Riley Czarnecki picked up the save against the Lightning then threw a complete game against Walsh in a 4-1 win. Roosevelt (8-6) has now won four of its first six games on this extended spring break trip.
ROOSEVELT 6, GOLDEY-BEACOM 2
Neither team was able to generate much offense until the Lakers came to bat in the top of the third.
Reyna Hyliard drew a walk and immediately stole second, putting her in the perfect position to score on the fielding error by the Goldey-Beacom shortstop.
Athena Pomele-Pen followed with an RBI single to score
Ella Dvoracek then Pomele-Pen scored on
Brynn Dvoracek's single two batters later to make it 3-0 Roosevelt.
The Lighting picked up a run in the bottom of the third, but it did not deter Hancock, who allowed only two hits in the first four innings. That gave the Lakers enough time to add on more insurance in the top of the fifth.
Isis Enriquez was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, and pinch runner
Rebecca Urbaniak scored on an RBI double from Pomele-Pen.
Kendall Pearson drew a walk then both her and Pomele-Pen stole a base to put themselves in scoring position.
Caitlin Williams' bunt single scored Pomele-Pen, but a subsequent error on the play at first also allowed Pearson to make it 6-1 Lakers.
Hancock allowed a second run in the bottom of the fifth before giving way to Czarnecki, who stranded a runner at third with a strikeout. The freshman allowed just one hit the rest of the way to preserve the victory for Roosevelt.
ROOSEVELT 4, WALSH 1
Czarnecki took the ball against the Cavaliers and allowed just four hits and a run over seven innings of work. Pomele-Pen kept the good vibes going in the second game with a double in the first inning and an RBI single in the third to give the Lakers the lead. Roosevelt added a second run on a fielder's choice from
Brynn Dvoracek, and were comfortable with the lead until Walsh scored in the bottom of the fifth.
The Lakers finally added some breathing room in the seventh inning with some small ball helping push across two runs.
Sydni Taylor, who pinch ran for
Libby Kreykes, scored on an error then
Ella Dvoracek scored on a wild pitch, both of which were set up with contact that never left the infield.
A leadoff walk was all the damage Czarnecki allowed in the seventh to finish with three strikeouts in her sixth win of the season.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt will face two familiar foes Friday with a second contest against Holy Family and a third game against Walsh.
