Roosevelt Swept To Open GLIAC Play

ROSEMONT – Roosevelt could not find the timely hitting while being swept by Grand Valley State on Friday in the first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex.

In this battle of the Lakers, it was Grand Valley State who pulled away late for an 11-3 win in the opener then continued the offensive output with a 13-6 decision in the second game. Roosevelt (6-14, 0-2 GLIAC) had 17 combined hits in the two games and also stranded 17 runners on the base paths in the defeats.

GRAND VALLEY STATE 11, ROOSEVELT 3
It was a game of missed opportunities for Roosevelt as it had a few chances to pull even with Grand Valley State or put pressure on them. Both teams put a runner in scoring position in the first inning, only for the starters to escape the jam. The visitors struck first with three runs in the second inning on a windy day in Rosemont.

The wind was particularly helpful for the host Lakers in the bottom of the third inning after Ella Dvoracek led off with an infield single. Rebecca Urbaniak launched an RBI double into the gap in left centerfield to score Dvoracek. Brynn Dvoracek then sent a double of her own into the wind for it to carry to the wall in centerfield.

However, a pair of errors came back to haunt Roosevelt in the fourth inning as three unearned runs crossed the plate to restore Grand Valley State's big lead. Libby Kreykes walked to lead off the bottom of the inning, stole second base then scored on a Caitlin Williams single to cut the deficit to 6-3. But the Lakers stranded Williams on third base then left the bases loaded in the sixth with a chance to extend the game.

Brynn Dvoracek and Williams were both 2 for 3 with an RBI while Ella Dvoracek was 3 for 4 with a run scored.

GRAND VALLEY STATE 13, ROOSEVELT 6
The offense was a constant for the two teams in the early innings of the second game after the teams were tied at 5 after two innings. Grand Valley State struck first with two runs in the top of the first, but Roosevelt was quick to counter in the bottom of the frame. Urbaniak walked then Kendall Pearson was hit by ball four, setting the stage for Brynn Dvoracek to tie the game with a triple into right field. Bianca Gallegos gave the Lakers the lead with an RBI groundout that scored Dvoracek.

Grand Valley State scored three runs in the top of the second, but once again Roosevelt had the answer in the bottom of the frame. This time, it was Kailey Hancock who worked a one-out walk then moved up on a Williams single. Ella Dvoracek moved over the runners with a sacrifice bunt then Urbaniak delivered a monstrous double over the left fielder's head to tie the game.

Roosevelt's deficit was 6-5 with two outs in the fourth inning when a dropped foul ball prolonged an at-bat. The next pitch was driven for a triple and Grand Valley State added four more runs to make it 10-5. Another Urbaniak double allowed Ella Dvoracek to score, but that proved to be the final run of the day for Roosevelt.

Urbaniak finished the game 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs after adding a single in the sixth inning. Williams was again 2 for 3, but no other Lakers hitter had multiple hits in the loss.

UP NEXT: The Lakers are right back in action in Rosemont on Saturday for a twinbill against Purdue Northwest at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex.
