ROLLA, Mo. – Roosevelt was an unstoppable offensive train Friday night while sweeping past LeMoyne-Owen in three sets at the Miner Invite hosted by Missouri S&T.
The Lakers (3-13) set the program record for hitting percentage in a single match with 40 kills and just seven errors for a .478 hitting percentage. The seven errors were also a program record along with the unworldly .722 hitting percentage in the first set. The result was a 25-5, 25-15, 25-17 victory for Roosevelt that set the record for fewest points conceded in a match.
It was a quick opening set after Roosevelt scored nine of the first 10 points. Yet it was more impressive that the Lakers notched the final 13 points of the set behind three kills from
Kajetan Bieniek, two blocks and a service ace from
Michele Bascape to finish off the game. Roosevelt had 13 kills and no errors on 18 swings in that first set with Bascape adding six assists to his kill and ace.
Roosevelt won the first seven points of the second set and again led 9-1, but this time the Lakers didn't have a monster run in them.
Diego Esquivel and
Daniel Mahoney each had four kills in the second set while
DeShawn Hoston assisted on 10 of the 13 kills.
The Lakers trailed for the only time all day in the third set after falling behind 2-0. But Roosevelt scored the next six points and cruised to the win. Mahoney had another six kills in the third set to finish with a team-best 10 and a .600 hitting percentage. Esquivel had four more kills to finish with nine in the match while Bieniek had six kills, three aces and two blocks. Â
UP NEXT: Roosevelt closes out the Miners Invite on Saturday with a match against Rockhurst at noon then facing the hosts, Missouri S&T, at 7 p.m.
