Early Barrage Dooms Lakers In Tennessee

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Roosevelt could not overcome a first-inning barrage in an eventual 12-3 loss to Lincoln Memorial on Saturday in a non-conference game in Harrogate, Tennessee.

The Railsplitters put up four runs in the first inning then added two more in the second and two in the third to jump out to an 8-0 lead. The Lakers (5-12) had a chance in the first inning to strike first after a James Berry double, but he was thrown out trying to steal third. Roosevelt also put two runners on in the fourth inning before stranding the pair there.

After Lincoln Memorial added a ninth run in the sixth inning, the Lakers offense came alive to attempt a comeback. Dimitri Spatharakis led off the seventh inning with a pinch-hit single into center field, and Aiden Brushaber added a pinch-hit single of his own to put two runners on base. A Railsplitters error put Quinn O'Bryan on base to load the bases, and Fabian Cruz drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Berry added his second extra-base hit of the day, this time a triple, to score the other two runners and cut the deficit to 9-3. However, Lincoln Memorial added two runs in the bottom of the seventh and one in the eighth inning for the final score.

The game's start time was delayed by weather, and the rain also ended the game prematurely. Roosevelt began the top of the ninth inning with O'Bryan singling into center field and Cruz earning a walk to bring up Berry. However, the rain was falling too hard and the game was called with two Lakers on base in the final inning.

UP NEXT: The Lakers and Railsplitters conclude their four-game set Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
