Lakers Trounce Trolls With Record-Setting Offense

CHICAGO – Roosevelt puts together its most dominant effort of the year in a straight-sets dusting of Trinity Christian on Wednesday night at the Goodman Center.

The only time the Lakers (2-12) trailed in the entire match was after losing the opening point of the third set to the visiting Trolls. Otherwise, they were in complete control of the match with both ties in the match being 1-1 in the second and third sets. Roosevelt hit .435 as a team in the 25-20, 25-18, 25-12 shellacking while serving up 12 aces and five blocks as a team.

Mark Zmojdzin set the program record by hitting .769 in the match with 10 kills and no errors on 13 total swings. Diego Esquivel would have held the record himself with his .615 hitting percentage in the match, but settled for setting the single-game record with eight aces in the match. As a team, Roosevelt set its program record with just 10 attacking errors, the fewest the Lakers have ever had in a match.

The Lakers were able to get some playing time for their bench and the reserves came up in big ways throughout the match. Terrance Young Jr. had two kills, Daniel Magana-Huynh set up three kills in the third set and Daniel Mahoney got two really good attacks over the net that were saved by the Trolls defense.

In addition, the starters all had solid matches as well with Kajetan Bieniek adding eight kills, Andrea Di Paola chipping in seven and Michele Bascape dishing out 32 assists.

The first set began with a pair of easy kills for Zmojdzin, setting the tone for the precision the Lakers would bring on offense. Roosevelt jumped out to a 7-2 lead before the Trolls clawed back to within 14-12 after a timeout. However, the variety of the Roosevelt offense was too much for the Trinity Christian front line as every starter except for Bascape had at least one kill in the set. Di Paola added a pair of strong defensive plays by teaming up with Zmojdzin for a block to bring up set point then getting a solo stuff to end the set.

Trinity Christian held its own a bit more in the second set until Esquivel stepped to the service line for the second time in the set. The junior had the kill to give Roosevelt a 10-6 lead then immediately served up an ace. A Trolls timeout didn't slow him down as each of his next two serves were not returned for two more aces. Once again, the Lakers ended the set with a block, this time it was the duo of Esquivel and Seth O'Brien that stuffed the attack on set point.

Roosevelt might have lost the first point of the third set, but that was about the only thing it did wrong in that final set. The Lakers scored the next seven points after that buoyed by three kills from Zmojdzin and two aces from Esquivel. Zmojdzin got in on the fun with three straight aces to build a 12-3 lead for the Lakers and that was the last hurrah for the Trolls. Esquivel added two more aces later in the set and Zmojdzin finished with four kills in the game to close out Trinity Christian.

UP NEXT: The Lakers' home finale is Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Bethel (Ind.) at the Goodman Center with Roosevelt honoring its senior class in a pregame ceremony.
