Powerful Offense Paces Lakers In First Win

CHICAGO – Roosevelt's explosive offense was on display Friday night as the Lakers took down Culver-Stockton in five sets at the Goodman Center.

Kajetan Bieniek and Andrea Di Paola both tied the program record with 24 kills, becoming the first duo to eclipse 20 kills in the same match for the Lakers (1-8). Mark Zmojdzin had 14 kills as well for Roosevelt, which also set its program record with 70 kills as a team. Michele Bascape dished out 42 assists in four sets of play and DeShawn Hoston had 13 in the opening set.

Bieniek set the standard in the first set with six kills, but the Lakers couldn't hold on to a late three-point lead in the 25-22 loss. Di Paola had six kills in the second set and Roosevelt was in control for almost the entire set before putting it away with a 6-1 run. Roosevelt his .323 as a team in the second set, which the Lakers won 25-19.

After having their own sets to shine, Bieniek and Di Paola combined to make life difficult for the Wildcats defense. The duo combined for 14 kills and hit .458 as the Lakers edged out Culver-Stockton 26-24 in the third. Roosevelt fell behind early in the fourth set and could not fully recover in a 25-21 loss.

Di Paola made his presence known early in the deciding fifth set with three kills and a block to help the Lakers open up a 4-1 lead. Bieniek took over late with three kills to earn an early sideout as well as an ace and a kill on his own serve in the middle of the set. The Lakers took the fifth set 15-11 to earn their first win of the season.

UP NEXT: The Lakers remain at home next week for a pair of exhibition matches against Bryant & Stratton and College of DuPage.
