CANTON, Ohio – Roosevelt could not overcome a slow start on offense in an 83-57 loss to Malone on Friday in Ohio.
The shorthanded Lakers (0-3) missed their first five shots and found themselves down 12-0 before Isabel Lindo broke the shutout with a free throw. Kelly Boyle knocked down a 3 just 20 seconds after Lindo's free throw as Roosevelt held the deficit to 13 at the end of the first quarter. Roosevelt shot just 23.4 percent from the field in the first quarter while Malone hit 5 of 6 from behind the arc.
There were a few chances to cut the deficit to single digits in the second quarter, but the Lakers could not string together enough stops. Isabella Pitta finished the half with 11 points, six rebounds and three blocks to lead the way as Roosevelt trailed by 17 at the intermission. Lindo added seven points and Boyle had six at halftime as well.
Roosevelt's offense was on fire in the third quarter by making 7 of 13 from the field in the period. However, the Pioneers' lead only dwindled down to 15 despite eight more points from Boyle and five from Nina Susic.
Pitta finished the game with a team-best 20 points and seven rebounds, the leader among the nine players available Friday. Boyle added 14 points and six boards, and Aubrey Leonard had six steals as Roosevelt scored 17 points off Malone's 20 turnovers.
