KENOSHA, Wis. – Jalen Windham scored 32 points in Roosevelt's 88-76 loss to Upper Iowa on Saturday in the GLIAC-GLVC Crossover at Parkside in Kenosha, Wis.
Windham played all 40 minutes and dropped 24 points on 8 of 13 shooting in the first half to help the Lakers take a 45-44 lead into the locker room. It was a major change of events for Roosevelt (0-2), which fell behind 10-2 after Windham opened the game with a jumper.
The Lakers shot nearly 55 percent from the field in the first half, including 50 percent from behind the arc, but could not pull away in that opening 20 minutes. The Peacocks actually led by as many as nine with 8:30 left in the half before the Lakers went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for the first time since the opening possession.
Windham then sparked an 8-0 run with a 3-pointer that helped push Roosevelt's advantage to six with three minutes left. Dante Sawyer scored the other five points in that run to finish with 10 in the first half. The senior then took the reins on offense in the second half with 12 points over the final 20 minutes to finish with 22 points.
Upper Iowa's defense became a bigger issue for the Lakers in the second half as their shooting percentage dropped to 35 percent over the final 20 minutes. In particular, the 3-pointers stopped falling for Roosevelt, which allowed the Peacocks to slowly pull away in the second half. Roosevelt missed a pair of 3-pointers with about 12:30 left in the game and within two minutes, Upper Iowa stretched the lead from five to 11.
The Lakers closed the game to seven points on a three-point play from Windham with two minutes left. However, that was as close as the Lakers got over the final 10 minutes of the game.
Davon Smith-Johnson led Roosevelt's efforts on the glass with eight boards, but the Lakers were outrebounded 41-24 in the game. Smith-Johnson and Kaleim Taylor both chipped in seven points, and only two other Lakers made a field goal in the game.
