ALLENDALE, Mich. – Roosevelt's 2025 concluded Saturday with a 69-13 loss to No. 21 Grand Valley State in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game in Michigan.
Although the visiting Lakers (2-8, 1-6 GLIAC) only scored a pair of touchdowns, they did rack up plenty of yards. Roosevelt put up nearly 450 yards of offense and averaged nearly five yards per play behind a balanced attack that featured a variety of weapons. Five different people had at least one carry in the game and 12 different receivers caught a pass.
The Lakers again put themselves behind the metaphorical eight-ball early with Grand Valley State scoring on its opening drive. Roosevelt had a decent drive going on its first possession before Tony Chahino was engulfed in Grand Valley State defenders and the home team returned the fumble for a score.
Grand Valley State scored on its first four offensive possessions to build a 35-0 lead before Roosevelt was able to force a punt. On the host's next drive, Ahmed Abusafieh forced a fumble on a quarterback rush deep in Roosevelt territory and Clayton Hardy fell on the loose ball. Norion Espadron took a screen pass 39 yards to flip the field in the Lakers' favor then later connected with Chahino on the 32-yard deep pass to put Roosevelt in the end zone.
Chahino finished the game 24 of 40 for 239 yards and the one score to Espadron. The senior receiver caught five passes for 118 yards with 50 yards after the catch, a common theme for Roosevelt. The Lakers had 209 yards after the catch in the game among their 331 receiving yards.
John Sherrod came up with a sack for Roosevelt in the third quarter to help force a punt as one of the defensive bright spots. The other came on special teams after Grand Valley State's eighth touchdown when Khalil Nichols blocked the extra point attempt, the third one the Lakers have blocked this season.
Zach Zella led Roosevelt to its final score finishing 11 of 18 for 92 in the final quarter. The senior also found an Espadron brother with a deep pass, this time a 32-yard toss to Norbert to put the Lakers inside the Grand Valley State 40. Krys Riley-Richardson had a 35-yard touchdown run negated by a penalty, but Zella found Diego Vela for a 12-yard pass on third and 7 before keeping it himself on fourth and 2 for a 12-yard touchdown run.
