CHICAGO – Roosevelt could not sustain its momentum from Friday's big win, falling in straight sets to Lake Superior State on Saturday at the Goodman Center.
The Lakers were playing for the chance to inch closer to the final spot in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament, but they got off to a slow start against the visiting Lakers. Roosevelt never led in the opening set as Lake Superior State was able to stretch its lead to as big as 18-6. A much-needed timeout reset the tone for the home team, and the Lakers came roaring back.
Roosevelt tallied the next six points to halve the deficit then continued to extend the run to 15-4, cutting the set to 22-21. However, the visitors scored the final three points of the set off a pair of two Roosevelt errors to take the first set 25-21.
The first-set rally did not wake up Roosevelt, either, and Lake Superior State jumped out to a 9-3 lead on the Lakers. This time, Roosevelt did not let its opponent get too far ahead and went on a 5-0 run to tie the set at 10. But again, the home team did not lead in the second set and the Lakers never were able to tie the set again. Lake Superior State would score the final five points of the set to take the second set 25-18.
An attack error to open up the third set finally gave Roosevelt its first lead, but Lake Superior State again countered when the points mattered the most. The back-and-forth nature of the third set culminated in a 16-16 tie that was broken at the service line. The Lakers' serving error was followed up by one of Lake Superior State's 13 aces and the visitors never looked back in capturing the final set 25-20.
Roosevelt's offense was powered by
Alessia Isgro, who hit .364 with 10 kills and also finished with six digs and a pair of blocks.
Abigail Wutka had six kills and
Isa Grana added five kills to go along with 11 assists.
Zoe Hutchinson led the Lakers with 12 assists while
Cydney Martinez had a team-best seven digs, one more than Grana and Isgro.
UP NEXT: The Lakers remain at home next weekend when they welcome Northern Michigan on Friday and Michigan Tech on Saturday.
