Lakers Suffer Two Setbacks At Midwest Crossover

HAMMOND, Ind. – Roosevelt dropped two more matches at the Midwest Crossover on Saturday in Hammond, Ind.

The Lakers (1-19) never fully recovered from a rough first set in going down in three against Missouri S&T in the morning. They then took the first set off Upper Iowa in the afternoon before losing to the Peacocks in four sets.

Saturday could not have started out much worse for the Lakers as they lost the first five points of the opening set and never truly recovered against the Miners. Missouri S&T won the first set 25-8, though the Lakers closed the margin to 25-16 and 25-22 in the other sets. Abigail Wutka led Roosevelt with 10 kills and Cydney Martinez had 12 digs in the match.

It was a much different story in the afternoon match as Roosevelt came out ready to fight against Upper Iowa. The score may have been tied six times in the first set, but once the Lakers took a 3-2 lead, the Peacocks never held a lead in the set again. Wutka had five of her team-high 10 kills in that opening set and Vivienne Merchant had a pair of blocks to help the Lakers get over the top at 25-23.

The second set was far less kind to Roosevelt as Upper Iowa pulled away for a 25-18 victory to tie the match. The third set was another tough pill for the Lakers as the Peacocks picked up consecutive points at the right moment to edge out a 25-22 win. There were 13 ties and five lead changes in that third set, and the result bled into the final set.

Upper Iowa reeled off seven straight points after Lihi Zaibert opened the fourth set with a block, and the Peacocks never looked back. They would claim the fourth set 25-14 as Roosevelt could not claw closer than five points.

Isa Grana had 28 assists in the match to move over the 1,000 assists mark in her career. Martinez led the way with 21 digs and the Lakers had 11 blocks, including a season-best eight solo stuffs. Merchant had five blocks, including three by herself, and both Zaibert and Nekane Parera had three blocks themselves.

UP NEXT: The Lakers return to the Goodman Center on Friday for a 6 p.m. match against Saginaw Valley State to start a five-game homestand in Chicago.
