ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule makers dealt Roosevelt a difficult hand.
The Lakers had to play three games in six days, including a short turnaround between Wednesday night at Morris Field and Friday night in St. Cloud, Minnesota against St. Cloud State. Yet Roosevelt met the challenge and thrived under the condensed schedule it was given.
It will be a celebratory seven-hour, 475-mile journey home for the Lakers after they completed the perfect week with a 2-1 win over the Huskies on Friday night. It was Roosevelt's second win over St. Cloud State in six days after beating the Huskies last Sunday at home, and it also officially secured the Lakers (8-2-3, 6-1-1 GLIAC) a spot in the conference tournament.
If there was any fatigue in the Lakers, it was quickly knocked out of them less than six minutes into the game when the Huskies scored after beating Roosevelt to a loose ball. That proved to be the only shot on goal St. Cloud State had the entire evening as its other six attempts never troubled
Eric Carvajal.
Almost immediately after conceding, Roosevelt was back on the offensive, forcing two tough saves from the Huskies goalkeeper. In the 20
th minute, the Lakers finally drew even as a long throw-in from
Daniel Schaefer entered the mix and found its way to
Fynn Mewes. The German knew exactly what to do with it, depositing the bouncing ball into the back of the net for his GLIAC-leading eighth goal of the season.
Not only was Roosevelt on the offensive for the rest of the match, it was highly efficient in its shot selection as well. The Lakers put 12 of their 16 attempts on goal, forcing 10 saves from the Huskies keeper. Roosevelt had seven shots on target among its eight first-half attempts then put five of eight on frame in the second half.
With so much offensive firepower, a winner was bound to come at some point for the Lakers, and it finally arrived with just under 15 minutes left. Mewes drew a pair of defenders on him about 30 yards away from goal and he pushed a pass ahead to
Caco Fernandez. The speedy winger took on his man along the left wing then cut back a pass into the middle where Mewes was there to collect it, settle the ball and smash it past a diving keeper.
With his two goals, Mewes extended his lead on his conference rivals in goals and total points with nine goals and 20 points. The second goal was also Mewes' fifth game-winning goal of the season, putting him just one winner behind Jose Garcia's six from the 2017 season. He's also now just one goal away from the ninth double-digit goal season in Lakers history.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt welcomes Saginaw Valley State to Morris Field next Friday at 3 p.m. for a critical match in the race for the conference championship. The Cardinals are currently four points behind the Lakers, but have a game Sunday at Northern Michigan to try and close the gap.
