Lakers Can't Catch Hawks At Quincy Invite

QUINCY, Ill. – Roosevelt began its weekend at the Quincy Invite with a straight-sets loss to the hosts on Friday evening in Quincy.

Andrea Di Paola led the Lakers with nine kills and Mark Zmojdzin had six kills as Roosevelt struggled to a .037 hitting percentage in the match. Di Paola also had two of Roosevelt's three blocks in the match and led the team with eight digs.

The Lakers (0-3) dropped the first set 25-15 after Achille Rustghi opened the match with an ace. Roosevelt was forced to use an early timeout after the Hawks won the next five points, and the deficit grew as large as seven points before the Lakers started to trim it. Quincy's lead was down to 14-13 in the first set before the Hawks won nine of the last 10 points.

Similar to when the two teams met two weeks ago at the Goodman Center, the Lakers came out with energy and focus in the second set. Kajetan Bieniek had two kills within the first three points as Roosevelt won four of the first five points in the set. However, Quincy rallied from a 7-3 deficit with six straight points en route to a 25-18 win.

Roosevelt never led in the third set despite Zmojdzin slamming down four of his six kills to pace the Lakers' best offensive set in the match. The Hawks broke open the set with a 5-0 run to take a six-point lead and the Lakers didn't get within five points for the rest of the match.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt concludes the Quincy Invite with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 3 p.m. in Quincy. The Lakers will face Rockhurst first before taking on Missouri S&T no earlier than 7 p.m.
