Roosevelt Sweeps Past Davenport With Second Half Surge

CHICAGO – Roosevelt stormed past Davenport on Saturday afternoon 85-67 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup at the Goodman Center.

The Lakers (5-10, 2-5 GLIAC) were dominant in the second half to build a 28-point edge with the lead only slipping during the closing minutes with the result never in doubt. In building that 28-point advantage in the second half, Roosevelt made nearly 70 percent of its shots while Davenport shot 36.4 percent over that same stretch as its deficit ballooned.

It wouldn't have been surprising for Roosevelt to take a 30-point lead in the first half with how well the Lakers played in the first six minutes. The Lakers hit eight of their first nine shots and held the Panthers to just 2 of 7 shooting with a pair of turnovers during that span. However, Roosevelt's 13-point lead would be tested late in the half.

Enari Thomas stole a pass with 8:50 left in the half then ran down the court before tossing a lob to Kennedy Brown for a monstrous alley-oop. The Lakers forced a shot clock violation on the subsequent Davenport possession to lead into the media timeout. Following the break, Roosevelt didn't make another field goal for more than seven minutes, maintaining its lead with some free throws and strong defensive pressure.

Although the advantage dipped to two with two minutes left, Fred Robinson IV broke the cold streak with a 3-pointer, spurring a 7-0 run over the final 80 seconds of the first half. Robinson and Forte Prater both scored nine points in the first half as Thomas led the way with 10 first-half points.

Thomas finished with 20 points to lead the four Lakers in double figures while Prater added 19, Robinson finished with 16 and Brown chipped in 12 on 6 of 7 shooting on the interior. Prater and Robinson both made 3 of 5 from behind the arc in the game, but Robinson supplemented his scoring by making 7 of 10 at the foul stripe. Prater led the Lakers with six assists, one more than Griffin Yaklich, who cemented his glue guy status with eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks to go along with nine points.

UP NEXT: The Lakers will look to further climb up the GLIAC standings on Monday with a 7:30 p.m. matchup against Grand Valley State at the Goodman Center.
