Lakers Stall In Loss To Tigers

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Roosevelt outgained its opponent for a third week in a row, but came up on the short end of a 24-8 game Saturday afternoon at Campbellsville.

The Lakers (0-3) didn't have much problem moving the ball against the Tigers, racking up 285 yards and averaging more than four yards per play. The defense even held Campbellsville to just 224 yards, including a paltry 1.9 yards per rush. Yet Roosevelt struggled to finish drives until the fourth quarter.

An early Roosevelt fumble set up the Tigers inside the red zone, but the Lakers defense held firm and held Campbellsville to a field goal. Deven Jarvis came up with a pick towards the end of the first quarter and the Lakers methodically marched down the field before settling for a field goal attempt. The missed kick gave the Tigers the momentum to score a touchdown then Jordan Pippion intercepted a Campbellsville pass right before half to maintain a 10-0 deficit at halftime.

Roosevelt was stuffed on fourth and one from its own territory, and the Tigers turned the missed conversion into a 17-0 lead. Campbellsville turned a Carson Budke interception into another touchdown before the Lakers offense finally dented the scoreboard. Budke completed 5 of 6 passes to move the Lakers from their own 25-yard line to the Campbellsville 5, and Cyrus Zuell did the rest with a four-yard carry then a one-yard touchdown.

Budke connected with Jack Young Jr. for the two-point conversion, the first time in nearly four years Roosevelt succeeded on a two-point conversion. The Lakers failed to recover the ensuing onside kick, but they forced a quick punt then drove right back down the field. The drive stalled on the Campbellsville 17-yard line then a second drive also stalled on the Tigers' half of the field to end the game.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt enters Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play for the first time next Saturday with a matchup against Ferris State at 1 p.m. in Big Rapids, Mich.
