Lakers Stumble Against St. Cloud State

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Roosevelt fell to St. Cloud State 2-0 in a non-conference match Friday afternoon at Morris Field.

The Lakers (0-1-2) played much of the game in their defensive half with roughly 70 percent of the first half being played on that side of the field. Yet Roosevelt stood firm on defense, limiting the Huskies to shots from the perimeters in the early going and forcing eight of St. Cloud State's first 11 shots to miss the goal.

St. Cloud State struck with its opening goal in the 37th minute then added a second in the 58th minutes while controlling the ball for large portions of the match. The Lakers finished with 45 percent of the possession and attempted three shots.

ROXY ROCKS: Although two goals slipped past her, Roxy Herrera was a big reason the Lakers were within one at halftime. The junior goalkeeper made a dazzling save just four minutes into the contest, tipping a shot off the crossbar and over the goal. The Chicago native finished with seven saves in the match, including five in the second half to keep the game within striking distance.

DEFENSIVE ANCHORS: Herrera may have been the Lakers' last line of defense, but Roosevelt's back four did plenty to help out their keeper. Peyton Connelly and Cheech Seuberling both made last-second tackles to either block shots or deny the Huskies a goal-scoring chance. Their play at the back was a major reason St. Cloud State was kept to the perimeter for much of the first half and why the Huskies had three shots blocked in the opening 20 minutes of the match.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt remains at home next Friday as it makes its debut in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference against Ferris State. The Lakers and Bulldogs will have their first ever meeting at Morris Field at 2 p.m. in the GLIAC opener for the Lakers.
