Late Rally Pushes Parkside Past Roosevelt

KENOSHA, Wis. – Roosevelt could not overcome another slow start to a match, falling in straight sets at Parkside in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Friday evening in Kenosha, Wis.

The Lakers (3-21, 1-12 GLIAC) fell behind quickly in the first set before dropping it 25-17 and a late push in the second set put Parkside over the top 25-18. In the third set, the Rangers were able to pull away at the very end with the final four points in a 25-21 victory.

Viktoria Marysheva and Yuliia Shchepkina both had eight kills to tie for the team lead, and Marysheva tied with Emily DeBlecourt with a team-best 11 digs. DeBlecourt, Aleksandra Barac and Isa Grana each served up two aces while Marysheva had the final one for the Lakers. On defense, Krista Norton was part of all three blocks against Parkside, teaming up with DeBlecourt on two and Barac on one.

It was no surprise the third set was by far Roosevelt's best as the teams were knotted up eight times and the lead changed hands on five occasions. Both Marysheva and Shchepkina had four kills in the set, and the Lakers had four of their seven aces in the game as well. Roosevelt went on an early run with DeBlecourt at the service line with a 6-1 streak that included both of DeBlecourt's aces and a pair of Marysheva kills.

The Lakers forced a timeout from Parkside after taking an 11-5 lead and the advantage held up until the Rangers tied the set at 15. The two teams traded kills for much of the rest of the set until Parkside broke a 21-21 deadlock with four straight points to secure its second sweep of the season against Roosevelt.

UP NEXT: The Lakers close out their road schedule Saturday at noon against Purdue Northwest in Hammond, Ind. as they try to avenge their home loss to the Pride earlier this season.
