Arlington Heights, Ill. – Roosevelt senior running back
Cyrus Zuell found the end zone for the fourth straight game, but it was not enough to erase an early deficit as visiting Michigan Tech prevailed 20-7 on Saturday afternoon at Morris Field.
The Huskies (6-3, 3-2) scored on their first offensive play and capitalized on two Roosevelt turnovers in the opening quarter to race out to a 13-0 advantage. Michigan Tech added a touchdown early in the second quarter, and yet the Lakers (1-7, 1-4) did not relent. Roosevelt kept the Huskies off the scoreboard for the final 39 minutes and limited Michigan Tech to just 55 yards of offense in the second half.
Zuell's team-best sixth touchdown of the season on a nine-yard run early in the fourth quarter moved momentum to the Roosevelt side. The Huskies' defense showed its resilience, though, thwarting the Lakers' comeback hopes with two late takeaways.
Zuell finished with 66 rushing yards and 79 yards of total offense. Senior
Alex Tran hauled in four passes for a season-best 54 yards, while junior tight end
Jack Young Jr. also set a season-high with a team-best 63 receiving yards.
Michigan Tech was led by quarterback Alex Fries who passed for 142 yards and two touchdowns. The senior also ran for 25 yards in the win.
The Lakers will take to the road next week squaring off with Wayne State in the Motor City at 12:00 p.m. central.
