HOUGHTON, Mich. – A late penalty kick sealed Roosevelt's fate as the Lakers fell 2-0 to Michigan Tech on Sunday in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match in Houghton, Mich.
Michigan Tech scored less than four minutes into the game before the Lakers (0-10-4, 0-9-2 GLIAC) settled in. The Huskies finished the opening half with a 16-3 edge in shot attempts, but
Roxy Herrera made eight stops to keep it a one-goal deficit.
Roosevelt began to turn up the pressure in the second half and all five shots the Lakers attempted over the final 45 minutes landed on target.
Daisy Hernandez-Loya had the first crack on goal in the 52
nd minute and
Bella Perry took a shot in the 62
nd. However, the Lakers' final three shots in the half came in the final five minutes after the Huskies converted on a penalty to double their lead.
Herrera finished with a career-best 14 saves, the third time in the last four matches she has had to make double-digit saves. She now has made 105 stops this season for the Lakers, becoming the fourth goalie in program history to hit triple digits in saves. The 14 saves are also the most in a game since
Tom Czop took over as Lakers head coach in the fall of 2020.
