Fernandez Sends Lakers Past Huskies

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Caco Fernandez picked the right time to score his first goal with Roosevelt, lifting the Lakers to a 1-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over St. Cloud State on Friday afternoon at Morris Field.

The game was heavily tilted towards the Lakers (7-4-2, 5-4-0 GLIAC) as the hosts led in shot attempts 22-6 and shots on goal 9-3. Roosevelt also held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks while forcing eight saves out of the Huskies goalkeeper. It was the final shot on goal, however, that proved to be the difference in Roosevelt moving up to tie St. Cloud State in the conference standings.

Roosevelt did a great job at winning the ball near midfield and Davide Comai started the attack the other way. He was able to feed Fernandez about 25 yards out of the box and a quick succession of passes put the ball at Nick Kilian's feet on the left wing. Kilian took a few dribbles into the box then cut back to slot a perfect pass to Fernandez, who reached and poked the ball to the other side of the diving keeper.

It was just the third appearance of the year for Fernandez after he missed much of the season with a leg injury. However, he has found the stride he had at High Point with five shots in the last two games, including a pair on target Friday.

Meanwhile, it was the seventh assist on the season for Kilian as his stretch of helpers continues to climb up the Roosevelt record books. It's been nine seasons since someone had at least seven assists in a single season when Jose Garcia had 10 helpers and Evan Trychta had eight assists during the 2015 season.

Eric Carvajal had to make two big saves in the first half to keep the game goalless and he finished with three stops for his fourth shutout of the season. He also took control of the box late in the game, helping to stave off a late corner kick for the Huskies in the closing minutes of the game. In nine conference matches, the junior keeper has three clean sheets, a .744 save percentage and 1.11 goals against average.

UP NEXT: The Lakers will look to climb up the GLIAC standings more Sunday when they host Northern Michigan at Morris Field for a noon kickoff. Roosevelt took down the Wildcats 1-0 earlier this month on the road in the first meeting of the season between the two teams.
