Lakers Stifle Crimson Wave For Sixth Straight Victory

WHITING, Ind. – Roosevelt raced out to an early lead and never relented, overwhelming Calumet St. Joseph 91-38 for its sixth straight win Saturday afternoon in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup in Whiting, Ind.

The Lakers (11-9, 9-3 CCAC) scored the first 16 points of the game and kept the Crimson Wave off the scoreboard for more than five minutes. They ended up leading 25-4 after the first quarter while holding Calumet St. Joseph to just 14.2 percent shooting. Roosevelt continued to extend the lead over the final 30 minutes, peaking at 61 in the fourth quarter.

The scoring began with a historic moment as Malou Savanna scored her 1,000th career point in college with an early layup. From there, Kristen Keys took over with 13 points on 6 for 6 shooting in the opening quarter. She also collected five rebounds to jumpstart Roosevelt's dominance on the glass. The Lakers finished the day with a 52-29 edge in rebounding with 18 second-chance points on 22 offensive rebounds.

Keys finished with 21 points, tying with Grace Beyer for the team high, and Savanna rounded out the trio in double figures with 16 points.  Those three combined to shoot 59 percent from the field to help the Lakers shoot 46 percent in the contest. Marie Outlay added nine points and nine boards for Roosevelt, tying her high school teammate Makiah Hawk for the team lead in rebounds. Alexia Lohman added nine points and eight rebounds off the bench and Ella Pritchard chipped in with eight points.

Roosevelt was equally as impressive sharing the basketball with primary ballhandler Jalyssa Carrasco out of the lineup. Beyer paced the Lakers with five assists, but three other players had four helpers as Roosevelt assisted on 21 of 34 made baskets. The Lakers only committed 12 turnovers, which tied for the season low, and added 31 points of the Crimson Wave's 26 turnovers.

The Lakers will attempt to tie the program record of seven straight wins Wednesday at home against Olivet Nazarene at 5:30 p.m.
